In an effort to engage the younger demographic and celebrate the rich history of Newport, Newport Minster is launching a special project aimed at individuals aged 18 to 25 as part of this year's Heritage Open Days. The project will empower young people to curate and host their own event centred around the theme of "Routes - Networks – Connections" within and around the Minster premises.
The initiative was announced during the recent NBA meeting, where Newport Minster representatives extended an invitation to members to encourage their young staff or groups to participate in this unique opportunity. With a vision to foster new experiences and boost confidence among participants, the project also offers a modest budget to cover refreshments and materials.
The chosen theme of "Routes - Networks – Connections" aims to explore the historical and cultural ties that bind Newport Minster to the island of Newport and beyond. Delving into the Minster's extensive 1000 years of history, participants will have the chance to delve into connections ranging from the East India Company to Indian regiments and the Crimea, providing a platform for intriguing insights and discussions, even encompassing slightly political perspectives.
Participants will have the freedom to research and present their findings in any format they choose, allowing for creative expression and varied perspectives. Additionally, there will be side projects aimed at assisting with the marketing of the event, enhancing participants' skills in event management and promotion.
The project will require a time commitment, with meetings initially estimated to be a couple of hours per month, escalating as the event approaches. Participants must also be available on the 7th of September to oversee their part of the event.
For those interested in learning more about the project, Newport Minster is hosting a drop-in session on Monday, April 8th at 5:30 pm at the Minster premises. All are welcome to attend and explore the opportunities available. A poster providing further details has been attached to facilitate spreading the word about this exciting endeavor.
As Newport Minster seeks to involve the community in preserving and celebrating its heritage, the project represents a unique chance for young individuals to make meaningful contributions while gaining valuable skills and experiences.
For further inquiries or to express interest in participating, individuals are encouraged to attend the drop-in session or reach out to Newport Minster directly.
